Porcelain  fixed  Bridges

Dental bridge

Porcelain bridge

There are several types of bridges.  You and your dentist will discuss the best options for your particular case.  The “traditional bridge” is the most popular type and is usually made of porcelain fused to metal.  Porcelain fixed bridges are most popular because they resemble your natural teeth.  This type of bridge consists to two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached to pontics (artificial teeth), filling the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

When single or multiple teeth are missing, Dr. Hill may recommend a bridge. A bridge is a replacement tooth or teeth anchored by teeth on each side of the missing one. The anchor teeth require crowns to support the bridge.

Reasons for a fixed bridge:

  • Fill space of missing teeth

  • Maintain facial shape

  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position

  • Restore chewing and speaking ability

  • Restore your smile

  • Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance

Dental Bridge Procedure

Like the dental crown procedure described earlier, dental bridges can be created and attached in two visits to our office.

  1. At your first appointment:
    • Dr. Hill will prepare the anchor teeth to have crowns placed on them.

    • She will take an impression of not just the anchor teeth, but the space where the bridge will be as well.

    • She will send the mold to the dental lab, where it will take two weeks to create the crowns and bridge.

    • While you're waiting for the dental lab to complete their work, Dr. Hill will fit you with a temporary bridge.

  2. During your second appointment:
    • Dr. Hill will fit the crowns, with the false tooth or teeth suspended between them, and do any necessary adjustments before cementing the crowns.

Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years, however they may need replacement or need to be re-cemented due to normal wear.
